The Port Ruighe is a NAS Talisker (like the Storm, the Dark Storm and the 57 North which I previously reviewed together with the Talisker 10) finished in Ruby Port pipes. Ruby port is the “plain” port, that isn’t allowed to oxidize while aging.
Talisker Port Ruighe (45.8% ABV)
Appearance: Light bronze, quick forming legs.
Nose: Wet peat, the nose is very Islay. A lot of sweetness with a wet wood burning fire. After a while, the peat dissipates and the fruityness of the port comes through on a nose that is very Talisker.
Palate: Red berry sweetness on the center of the tongue, full bodied liquid with strong notes of BBQ flavored Bissli (an Israeli deep fried pasta based snack – Israel’s potato chips).
Linger: Medium, light peat with some tannins that leave a somewhat bitter finish.
Conclusion
Talisker has done a nice job extending the range, although the choice of Ruby Port is called into question after tasting Tawny Port finished whisky.
This bottle was part of a Port themed night at the Malt Mongers Israel Whisky Club.
