A Glengoyne Special Edition – In a Rum Cask

From time to time, you can find a one off special bottling, being either a special cask or a finish, coming from the distillery. Today’s expression is just one of those, from Glengoyne and tomorrow we’ll taste a special 10 year old Aberlour, finished in a sherry cask.

This expression is a 10 year old (May 1993 to May 2004, so it must be just a bit short of being 11) that was finished in a rum cask and bottled for Dutch retailer Gall & Gall.

0000Glengoyne 10 Year Old Rum Cask Finish, Bottled for Gall & Gall, Distilled 5.1993, Bottled 5.2004 (40% ABV)

Appearance: Gold, legs consistently coming off a ring, getting thinner and thinner.

Nose: Sweet with honey and faint overripe banana and white vinegar. The addition of spice aromas – with pepper, cinnamon and allspice – create a whisky that is sour, spicy and sweet with hints of malt.

Palate: Citrus and spice, with a layer of sugary sweetness (but not brown cane sugar), pepper, sage, and you can taste the rum. Fizzy feel in mouth, drying the top of the palate and peppery going down the gullet.

Linger: Bitter citrus, milk chocolate, honey, spice up in the throat. It leaves a dry bitterness and a peculiar, though not unpleasant, feeling on the roof of the mouth.

Conclusion

Rather good rum finish. This expression is very balanced, and I would happily have had a bottle of it.

The dram I sampled was the very end of an auction bottle won by my friend Yori, Slainte!
